Frequently Asked Questions

What type of fuel do scooters use?2026-03-17T20:00:41+00:00

Most of our scooters recommend 91 octane or better. This is readily available at gas stations. Most stations also offer lower octane fuels; while a single tank will likely not cause issues, repeated use can shorten the life of your motor.

If you accidentally use a lower octane, just pay close attention to the motor and listen for irregular noises (*pinging* is what’s most concerning). If you hear anything out of the norm, either bring it in to us or drain and replace the remaining fuel in the tank.

My eScooter has an error code, what’s going on?2026-03-17T19:40:24+00:00

Error codes on eScooters/ eBikes can mean many different things. Luckily, our technicians have a database to reference for most makes and models.

Once we source the exact issue,  we’ll let you know what it’ll take to get it back on the road!  It could be a bad component, or as simple as re-pinning a connector.

Do you fix eScooter tires?2026-03-17T19:43:54+00:00

Yes!

We are able to repair almost all eScooter tires and we keep hundreds of tubes and tires in stock! This means that we can get you back on the road quick!

Don’t want to deal with airing up your tires ever again? Opt for a solid, airless tire at your next tire change!

My eScooter / eBike isn’t slowing down like it used to (Brakes aren’t working)2026-03-17T19:53:03+00:00

This a common (and dangerous) situation. The brake calipers on eScooters aren’t a floating design like cars and trucks, so they have to be adjusted as the pads wear down and brake cable stretches, that’ll get it back to stopping like new.

Most eScooter brakes have 4 -5 adjustment points that we manipulate to get your caliper and pads perfectly in alignment with the rotor, at the correct distance from the disc surface. Get confidence in your brakes again!

Can I use my car to jump start my scooter?2026-03-17T19:55:33+00:00

It is possible, but not recommended. The electrical system in your scooter is designed to operate at a much lower amperage than a car/truck. Jump starting a scooter with a car can damage the scooter’s electronics which will lead to costly repairs. We recommend using a battery trickle charger if your battery needs to recharged. Or bring it to Scoots and we can test and recharge your battery at no cost!

Most scooter batteries must be charged at less than 1100mA.

Don’t forget that many scooters have a kick start mechanism, which will start your scooter, even with a dead battery!

Do you offer performance upgrades for my scooter?2026-02-18T22:05:16+00:00

Yes! Scoots works with several providers to bring you the best in aftermarket parts available. This includes (but certainly isn’t limited to) shocks, forks, big bores, and exhausts.

We also have a full service shop and are more than willing to install your go-fast bits!

Are there additional costs to park on campus?2026-03-17T19:58:36+00:00

Moped/ Motor Scooter/ Motorcycle: eScooter/ eBike

There is a scooter parking pass for both Texas A&M and Blinn campuses. The good news is, they’re MUCH less expensive than a car pass! Texas A&M scooter permits only cost $80-$190/year.  Blinn motorcycle permits cost around $100 for the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters (based on 2026 data)

These passes are different from car passes in that they let you park in any designated motorcycle area. Texas A&M campus has over 60 lots to choose from (and you get access to ALL OF THEM), come check out our map to find the best locations for you!

Contact your school for more instructions on how to purchase one of these.

Micro mobility permits are required for all eScooters, and eBikes that will park on TAMU campus. The good news is that the fee is only $10, one-time. There is not currently a permit necessary for parking at Blinn.

This program allows the university to keep track of serial numbers in case of theft and provides VIP parking in front of most buildings on campus.

What kind of gas mileage should I expect?2026-02-17T22:41:26+00:00

This also varies greatly based on model and motor size, but our lineup ranges from 75-140 mpg advertised. You can take a look at our Products Page to see all of our models and associated MPG.

Do I have to wear a helmet on my scooter / moped?2026-03-17T22:45:05+00:00

Much like licenses, helmet laws vary from state to state. In Texas, if you are 21 and have an applicable health insurance plan, you do not have to wear a helmet. Same rules apply for passengers.

For obvious reasons, Scoots recommends riders wear full safety gear anytime they plan on riding. Protect your noggin people!

If you’re on a rental, you’re required to wear a helmet and eye protection regardless of age. Our rental insurance requires it (and it’s a good idea anyway… just do it).

How frequently should the oil be changed in my scooter?2026-02-17T22:37:12+00:00

Scooter motors only carry a quart or less of oil, so it gets dirty much sooner. On the flip side it requires much less oil per change so we are able to use a higher quality lubricant for much less than an equivalent car oil change.

We suggest coming in for regular oil changes every 6 months or 1,000 miles after the initial 200-300 mile break-in service. We can do this service as a same-day appointment, so call or text us to book in advance!

Not all bikes follow the same maintenance guidelines, ultimately it’s best to check your user manual and follow the instructions provided.

Help! I lost my title!2026-03-17T20:06:20+00:00

We process the Title & License work at the point of sale, but once the vehicle is in your name, the state doesn’t allow us to help any further. But No Worries! The process isn’t bad.

In order to get a replacement, you will complete form VTR-34 (application for a certified copy of title) and mail to the state along with $2 and a copy of your photo ID.

NOTE: We’re talking about Texas here, other states may be different.

I want to keep my scooter in tip-top shape. What maintenance should I expect?2026-03-17T20:08:41+00:00

For the most part, scooters require very little maintenance so long as you ride them often! The number one issue we see with motor scooters is stale fuel and clogged carbs from sitting unused for long periods of time.

Periodic maintenance varies a little between the models we offer, but regular gear and motor oil changes should keep you scooting for quite some time. Like a traditional car, batteries, belts, filters, tires, and spark plugs will occasionally need to be checked and possibly replaced. Unlike a traditional car, most wear items (including tires) cost less than $60 for the majority of motor scooters!

How fast do they go?2026-03-17T20:18:54+00:00

That depends primarily on motor size, as well as other factors like size of the rider, weather, and components used. Our 50cc motor scooters can all easily do 30-35 and some can top out in the 50s (*de-restricted).

Larger motors greatly increase acceleration. For all the speed demons out there, our largest motor scooter, the Kymco AK550, can take you across the country with ease. We also carry a line of motorcycles up to 1200cc if motor scooters aren’t your game.

What do I do if my battery is dead?2026-03-17T20:19:38+00:00

If your scooter battery is dead, you can bring it to Scoots and we will test and recharge your battery at no cost!

If it needs to be replaced, we will probably have your battery in stock! If not, we can order it for you.

Don’t forget, many scooters have a kick start which can get you running, even with a dead battery.

Do I need to carry insurance?2026-03-17T20:21:00+00:00

In Texas you DO need to carry liability insurance at the state minimum coverage of 30/60/25. Fortunately, insuring scooters is CRAZY CHEAP!

A typical liability policy on most scooter runs less than $80 for the whole year! You can also carry full coverage for most scooter models with price averages around $35/mo. Of course your insurance rate will depend on a number of factors like driving history, age, scooter model, etc.

Do I need a motorcycle (Class M) license to RIDE a 50cc or under moped?2026-03-17T20:21:55+00:00

In Texas, you only need a basic (Class C) driver’s license to ride a Moped. That’s the same license you need to drive a car.

Moped/Motorcycle and scooter laws vary from state to state. All riders must follow the laws of the state in which their license was issued; (For example, if your driver’s license is from Texas, you would follow Texas licensing laws).

Although it’s not required, we strongly recommend all riders complete a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, even if you’re riding a 49cc scooter!

Do I need a license to BUY a scooter?2026-03-17T22:34:27+00:00

This is going to sound a bit crazy, but by Texas law, you can buy any scooter or motorcycle with only a GOVERNMENT ISSUED ID. That could be a driver’s license, state or federal issued ID card, passport, etc.

Now for the MASSIVE disclaimer: the requirements to BUY a scooter/motorcycle and the requirements to LEGALLY RIDE a scooter/motorcycle are very different. To ride most 49cc scooters in Texas, you only need a basic Class C driver’s license, the same license that allows you to drive passenger cars/trucks. To ride anything above 49cc (and 49cc scooters not certified as Mopeds) you’ll need a motorcycle license. See our FAQ about Licensing for Mopeds vs Motorcycles for more info.

My scooter won’t start… What should I do?2026-03-17T22:40:59+00:00

If it’s cranking over, but not firing up we call that a “crank, no start” and there are a number of culprits that could cause this. If it’s been sitting unused for a while, it could be stale fuel and/or a clogged carb. If it’s been riding fine, then it did this all the sudden, it’s likely not carb related.

Alternatively, if you have a “no crank, no start” scenario, it could be something as simple as a dead battery. Scooter batteries are much smaller than car batteries. Because of this, their magical power to start your scooter dissipates more quickly. Frequent riding can often be enough to prevent this, but a battery trickle charger can also be a useful tool to keep your scoot ready to go at a moment’s notice! We keep trickle chargers in stock. They attach to your battery and plug into a wall outlet to keep your battery fully charged.

We also charge and test batteries for FREE, so bring your battery by the shop and we’ll confirm if the battery is still happy and healthy.

If your bike doesn’t want to start using the electric start, try these steps;
1) Check the electronics. When you turn the key to on, does anything respond (blinkers or brake lights)? If no, ensure your kill switch is in the ON position. If there are still no signs of life, it’s likely that your battery is dead or a fuse is blown.
2) Some older models come with a manual choke, this can help a cold motor come back to life. Be sure to turn the choke off once the bike has warmed up to operating temperatures. If your bike doesn’t have a manual choke, it’s likely an Automatic Choke (AKA Fuel Enrichment Circuit), try holding about 1/3 throttle and try to start.
3) Check fuel. You’d be surprised how often this is the issue. If your scooter has a manual petcock (typically older scooters) then ensure that this is not set to off.
4) Attempt to kickstart. Scooters will charge the battery on their own much like the alternator in your car. Almost all of our models come with a kickstart lever. Turn they key on and try and kick it over. If this works, be sure to ride around for a few minutes to let your charging system properly charge the battery.

Still won’t start? Give us a shout and we can come pick up your scooter and bring it back to the shop! Our techs will jump in and get you back on the road ASAP!
